I'm suffering from an addiction I'm trying to break, sometimes I need a little motivation when it feels impossible to get through. Have any good, famous quotes that I can look at?
Nothing religious for crying out loud.

Othello,

Wow, good luck to you. Here's a couple of inspirational quotations that have helped me keep going:

1. "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." –Nelson Mandela

2. "For everyone who thought I couldn’t do it. For everyone who thought I shouldn’t do it. For everyone who said, ‘It’s impossible.’ See you at the finish line."

–From the sign on the wall of the late Christopher Reeve's exercise room where he did his daily physical therapy after being paralyzed from the neck down in a horse riding accident

    Hi,
    Best philosophy is to get to know yourself; most people with addictions are afraid to face something in their lives. But they cannot face their fears until they know and accept who they are. Here is something you may want to try - couldn't hurt and it doesn't cost you anything.

    You have to make a decision - do you want to live your life or do you just want to survive in addiction? If you do want to live, then make the commitment to yourself that you will live. Without that commitment, you will stay in the mode you are in.

    Then re-focus your attention.
    Remember a time when you did something you thought you couldn't or when you helped someone and you felt awesome? Remember how you breathed? What you thought? How you felt? How you stood (posture)? Practice getting yourself in the mode; get yourself in that mode as often as you can. Stay in that mode (keep taking actions/making decisions that make you feel awesome) - that is your confidence mode.

    Then get a mirror, look yourself in the eyes - and ask yourself - what do I know about this person? Who is this person? What do I like about this person? What makes this person happy? What can I do to make this person in the mirror love me? Can I give him/her a gift? Do I need to spend some time with her/him? Does this person need hugs? Does this person enjoy helping others? What do I need to say to this person for him/her to feel loved? Really think about those questions and find an answer. Focus your thinking on finding answers to those questions. While you are finding answers, find someone you can help - some one you can be of service to. Be patient, be calm, be confident. This too shall pass! Best Wishes!

    Hold fast to dreams

    "Life is sh*t" - anonymous

    This helps me because sometimes I feel like things are SUPPOSED to be some other way. Expectations can cause horrible things, plus I don't see any benefit in expectation.

  6. Synes thesia Says:

    Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
    Life is but an empty dream ! —
    For the soul is dead that slumbers,
    And things are not what they seem.

    Life is real ! Life is earnest!
    And the grave is not its goal ;
    Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
    Was not spoken of the soul.

    Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
    Is our destined end or way ;
    But to act, that each to-morrow
    Find us farther than to-day.

    Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
    And our hearts, though stout and brave,
    Still, like muffled drums, are beating
    Funeral marches to the grave.

    In the world's broad field of battle,
    In the bivouac of Life,
    Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
    Be a hero in the strife !

    Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
    Let the dead Past bury its dead !
    Act,— act in the living Present !
    Heart within, and God o'erhead !

    Lives of great men all remind us
    We can make our lives sublime,
    And, departing, leave behind us
    Footprints on the sands of time ;

    Footprints, that perhaps another,
    Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
    A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
    Seeing, shall take heart again.

    Let us, then, be up and doing,
    With a heart for any fate ;
    Still achieving, still pursuing,
    Learn to labor and to wait.

    A Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

    Edit: I guess it is a bit religious, but the most memorable lines are not religiously biased. I hope it helps you see the fruits of persistence in life.

  7. Jane Says:

    " You can take it on your feet, or beg on your F*cking knees"
    I have no idea who said it, but it works for me. I believe that when the odds are stacked against you, that you can either weep in a corner, or come out fighting?
    I choose the latter! Have a cry and a moan, but don't expect anyone else to do it for you, and this quote always brings that home to me.

    Here's an anti-religious one that's pretty clever:

    Man would rather have the void as purpose than to be void of purpose.
